We are winning this long struggle for full LGBT equality. It might not be happening as quickly as I would like at times, but there is no doubt that we are winning. For example, I feel it as I closely watch this marriage debate, with David Boies and Ted Olson obliterating "junk science" arguments of the religious right. Even some Republicans leaders are joining our fight or coming out of the closet.
As Harvey Milk taught us, each time the news media reports on another aspect of society where gays are discriminated against -- in serving in the military, in marriage, in churches, etc -- we win. The more light of truth is shined on institutionalized homophobia, the more public opinion shifts in our direction. We have come a long way, as a community, since our defeat on Prop 8 in 2008. In hindsight, I think this will be seen as a watershed event for the movement: we said "enough already" and watched the arising of a new generation of young activists. Large swaths of society paid attention to this equality struggle for the first time.
Yes, I am encouraged on this unusually warm, early September morning in San Francisco. And determined to keep pushing ahead.
