Much ado about something: Andrew Sullivan on Obama's "long game" (and why his critics are wrong)

The gay public intellectual Andrew Sullivan has always been controversial and his Newsweek cover story about Obama's long-term strategy is no exception. He talks about Obama's shift in the country's investments (in education and affordable healthcare), foreign policy (muscular multilateralism), and expansion of opportunities (repeal of DADT), and sensible regulation (on predatory lending and Wall Street). Read it for yourself.

Listen to Andrew talk with Anderson Cooper about the spirited reactions from the right and left to his article.

Andrew is right. Obama knew that there would be a backlash from conservative elements in society to the first election of a black man as a president and the reform of health care (there always is -- people with this traditional mindset were against the abolition of slavery, equal rights for women, and most other advances in society). So he made his bets early, settled in, watched the Tea Party craziness and resulting GOP presidential primary circus, and governed for the long haul. And the best interests of a strong, middle class America.
