12/15/11

I must be too tired to do anything else because I am watching tonight's GOP debate. Here are my notes...

6:45PM They all are piling on Gingrich. You can tell the GOP establishment (including Fox) is concerned that he will become the party's nominee. Newt is handling it well.

6:50PM Santorum gets a large round of applause for helping to defeat three Iowa judges who ruled in favor of marriage equality. These Iowa Republicans really don't like gays but that's no surprise.

7:00PM Mitt just said that he nominate Supreme Court justices like Thomas, Roberts, Scalia, and Alito. This is from a man who called himself an independent, non-partisan Republican when he ran against Ted Kennedy. Who is this man? God only knows...

7:04PM Ron Paul gives a well-reasoned response on possible military action in Iran. Santorum rambles, serving up the usual hawkish bromides

7:09PM Mitt is now calling Obama weak on foreign policy (what a laugh!) and is sounding like a war-monger. Crazy rhetoric. Obama is the president who is bringing the war to Al Qaeda including killing Osama Bin Laden, which W did not accomplish.

7:16PM Ron Paul, again, sounds reasonable when pushed on Iran and foreign wars. Huntsman has good points too.

7:20PM Rick Perry rambles on about Syria, Iran and the Middle East. This man can barely talk in this setting.

7:21PM It is hard to listen to all this right-wing rhetoric...most of it is extreme, from the crazy-conservative fringes, and divorced from facts and science. Mitt has totally recast himself as one of these nut-jobs. Huntsman is the only centrist here. And, boy, do they hate Obama. Hate is the operative word with this crowd.

7:32PM The Fox commentators ask leading conservative questions, not impartial ones. Pouring kerosene on an open fire. I am feeling a bit sorry for Mitt Romney: his blind ambition means he is willing to do or say anything to become president. It is truly scary.

7:40PM It is ironic that these Republicans are blaming Obama for the economic mess that their president and party created. Now poor Mitt is trying to how he became pro-Life. Weak. Good for Chris Wallace, who is grilling Romney for switching his positions on gay rights.

7:46PM Santorum and Bachmann are like rabid dogs now that the talk has turned to social issues. They don't seem to understand the Bill of Rights or the separation of church and state. Sad.

7:50PM The finale, and I am amazed how much these contenders hate Barack Obama...a centrist and often-hawkish Democratic President, not a socialist as Fox News suggests. Their rhetoric is a mix of barely-veiled racism, hollow and tired conservative ideas, and distortions of reality. No, Barack Obama isn't perfect, but he is far smarter and stronger than any of these contenders.

I am off to the gym to get back into my body after that alternate view of reality.
