Adrienne is right.  Every group of people, especially those who are discriminated against, need books, movies, music, art, etc that affirm their life experience.

This kid has been going through a lot: his dad died, he won a medal in front of the hometown crowd in the last Olympics, etc, so I cannot be hard on him for his journey to accepting himself. He's only 19.  I didn't always come out to others with grace and perfect honesty; I can relate to Tom's story.
