U.S. Catholics' attitudes about the church: 'out of touch!'

Check out the latest poll of Catholics' attitudes toward their church. In short, they strongly disapprove of its handling of the child abuse scandals and its teachings about sexuality and marriage equality.  These results mirror the attitudes of my formerly, highly Catholic family, whose most members no longer attend or support the church.  They were sick of the hypocrisy of its "pro-family" rhetoric when most of its leadership was protecting molesters of children -- like Cardinal Mahony did in California and then he denied responsibility for his actions and blamed the victims.  Not to mention the vile and hateful treatment of LGBT by the church, including its meddling in politics and trying to impose its 'morality' on non-believers, through civil law. Ironically, Catholics still believe in love and marriage -- but for everybody.

From the recent CBS/New York Times poll:

  • 62 percent of Catholics favor same-sex marriage.
  • 79 percent favor the use of artificial methods of birth control.
  • 91 percent believe the next pope should favor using condoms to prevent the spread of HIV and other diseases.
  • 53 percent believe the Catholic Church is out of touch with the needs of Catholics.
  • 69 percent believe the next pope should favor allowing priests to get married.
  • 69 percent believe the next pope should favor allowing women to become priests.

As a CEO I worked with used to say, "change or die." It is time that the corrupt and ossified hierarchy of the church learned from the Catholic laity, because these Catholics have kept the true teachings of Christ alive.
