This weekend, I saw a wonderful Utah production of "Big River," a musical based on book "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn"

On Friday night, I saw the musical called "Big River," based on the book "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain, here in Logan, Utah, at the Old Repertory Theatre. I was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of this musical, as it brings to life Twain's characters and dialogue with power and sensitivity.  I can see why the 1980s Broadway production ran for over 1,000 performances and it remained one of the few very successful American musicals amongst the emerging successes coming from Great Britain in that decade.

The Old Rep in Logan is a respected regional theatre, with a high caliber artistic staff and cast, located in downtown Logan, in a beautiful turn-of-the-century building.  In particular, Lego Lewis (as Jim) and Stefan Espinosa (as Huck) are perfectly cast and have tremendous acting talent.  Espinosa delivers a masterful performance, conveying both the naive and devilish qualities of his Midwestern character.

This musical has strong messages about racism, betrayal, forgiveness, and friendship.  It captures the spirit of Twain and America.
